<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Jointly volunteer with UNESCO and International Work Camp Opportunity to grow into becoming a global citizen [June 30, 2010] <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_06227450202509328 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-30_14-38-23_495.jpg\" target=_blank> This summer, 129 students from Yeungnam University will practice \'love without borders\' in 14 countries in Europe and Asia. Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) held a launching ceremony of the 19th overseas volunteer groups at the main auditorium of the Law Library on the morning of the 30th. The competition was 4 to 1 for selection, and they will be dispatched to 14 nations around the world including Turkey, Armenia, Slovakia, Estonia, Ukraine, and Indonesia from early July. In particular, since it is a program jointly being pursued by Yeungnam University and international organizations such as UNESCO and IWO (International Workcamp Organization), it is a great opportunity to increase capacities as a global citizen. This is because young people from all over the world will come together and work and live together for about a month, and so it will offer the opportunity to overcome the racial, language, and cultural differences and be able to respect each other. Furthermore, it is also a great chance to naturally create a global human network with young people from around the world. To the students leaving for overseas volunteer work, Lee, Hyo-soo stated, \"By taking time at night to assess the day\'s volunteer activities, you will be able to learn the various perspectives of people from different countries on the same problem, and will also be able to learn from them.\" He also emphasized, \"If time for assessment is not included in the schedule, our students should take charge and make this time. That is the way to global leadership.\" Yeungnam University is the only university in the local area that has dispatched an overseas volunteer group in collaboration with international organizations. The only universities in Korea to do so is Yeungnam University, Hongik University and Kyunghee University. Lee, Ju-mi (Senior in Department of Korean Language and Literature, 23), who will be departing for Turkey on July 7, stated, \"I am planning to spend the month not thinking of it as volunteer work, but as a chance to meet and become friends with the people of the world. That\'s because if I think that I am going there to help people in economically less fortunate environments than ours, that may lead to a sense of chauvinism.\" She added, \"I want to share the kindness of Koreans to Turkey, which is our \'brotherly country\' and become friends with people of all over the world.\" <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_027768582151537835 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-30_14-38-43_495.jpg\" target=_blank>

Recently, he became the first winner of the \'Moheon Bio-Pharmacy Young Scientists Awards\'. The \'Moheon Bio-Pharmacy Young Scientists Awards\' is an award made at the personal expense of honorary professor Lee, Seung-gi, who retired from the Seoul National University College of Pharmacy, to foster young scientists. The award is granted to young scientists in graduate school or post-doc researchers who have published an outstanding thesis. Dr. Thapa received the honors at the awarding ceremony at the 20th anniversary symposium of the Bio-Pharmacy Research Association on the 16th. Dr. Thapa, who studied at the national Tribhuvan University (Kathmandu), which is Nepal\'s best university, enrolled at the Yeungnam University College of Pharmacy PhD program in September 2006. Prior to coming to study abroad, he had a managerial position at the brand development department of a beer company in Nepal, and rather than taking a high salary and stable lifestyle, he chose to become a researcher. And by the time he received his PhD in December 2009, he published over 10 theses in SCI and SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded) level international journals on research of colon cancer. This resulted in him being hired as a research professor at the Yeungnam University College of Pharmacy in March and also winning the Young Scientists Awards. He is currently studying vascularization in the cancer cell metastasis process, and his dream spend his life researching the bio-pharmacy sector. However, he is planning to suspend his research temporarily next month and return to his home country. He is going to wed his fiance who has stood by his side waiting for the past 4 years. He was happy to give his wife a meaningful wedding gift and said, \"I am ever-more honored because this award is from private funds given by veteran professors in pharmacy and bio-science sectors to foster younger scientists.\" He added, \"I am able to receive this honor because of my colleagues and under-classmen that have shown the best teamwork in a family-like environment in the lab, and Professor Kim, Jung-ae, who always demanded our very best.\" <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_02683046616688608 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-30_13-49-01_495.jpg\" target=_blank> [Colleagues of the research lab and Professor Kim, Jung-ae (second from the right) congratulating Dr. Thapa\'s awarding] Professor Kim, Jung-ae (College of Pharmacy), who guided him as he wrote his PhD thesis, stated, \"It\'s become a problem that the younger generation of Korea are increasingly avoiding natural sciences or engineering majors, so I hope that the success story of Dr. Thapa who gave up his guaranteed lifestyle in search of his dreams will be know far and wide so that talented students will study in natural sciences or engineering.\" <See article related> <yonhapnews>2010-6-21 http://app.yonhapnews.co.kr/YNA/Basic/article/new_search/YIBW_showSearchArticle.aspx?searchpart=article&searchtext=%ec%98%81%eb%82%a8%eb%8c%80&contents_id=AKR20100621129800053 <Kyunghyang Shinmun>2010-6-22 http://news.khan.co.kr/kh_news/khan_art_view.html?artid=201006211727505&code=100203 <The Seoul Economic>2010-6-22 http://economy.hankooki.com/lpage/opinion/201006/e2010062114353248200.htm <Maeil Shinmun>2010-6-22 http://www.imaeil.com/sub_news/sub_news_view.php?news_id=25460&yy=2010 <Electronic Times>2010-6-22 http://www.etnews.co.kr/news/detail.html?id=201006210111 <Yeongnamilbo>2010-6-22 http://www.yeongnam.com/yeongnam/html/yeongnamdaily/collar/article.shtml?id=20100622.010250711100001 <The Financial News>2010-6-22 http://www.fnnews.com/view?ra=Sent1601m_View&corp=fnnews&arcid=0922020458&cDateYear=2010&cDateMonth=06&cDateDay=21 <Kyongbukilbo>2010-6-22 http://www.kyongbuk.co.kr/main/news/news_content.php?id=493875&news_area=080&news_divide=08001&news_local=&effect=4 <Daeguilbo>2010-6-22 http://www.idaegu.com/new/pages/sub.php?load=su&bcode=ALAE&no=6525 <Kuminilbo>2010-6-23 http://news.kukinews.com/article/view.asp?page=1&gCode=kmi&arcid=0003842214&cp=du

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Lee, Ji-hye, 1st year in master\'s course and Park, Jeong-heun, senior Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun\'s research lab, continuing tradition of SCI thesis publication by undergraduates [June 7, 2010] Two female students in The Yeungnam University School of Biotechnology Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun\'s research lab placed as the joint first author in an SCI journal. This time they are Lee, Ji-hye (23), who is in her first year in her master\'s degree course and Park, Jeong-heun (22), who is a senior in her undergraduate course. They found an important clue in preventing arteriosclerosis and published their clinical research thesis in the June issue of 《the International Journal of Molecular Medicine》. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_05819085806527986 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-30_13-39-52_495.jpg\" target=_blank> [Lee, Ji-hye (left) and Park, Jeong-heun (right) are speaking with Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun (center) while looking at their thesis that published in the SCI journal] After analyzing a 64 year old Korean woman who had hyperlipidemia, but had low density lipoprotein (LDL), and thus did not show signs of arteriosclerosis, they discovered that it is essential to lower the value of LDL from cholesterol. This suggested a new direction on existing research that focused on lowering the overall value of cholesterol, and it was recognized for its value in the international society through the publication of the thesis. Park, Jeong-heun commented, \"I was able to place my name on the SCI journal as an undergraduate student because of Ji-hye.\" Meanwhile, Lee, Ji-hye praised Park, Jeong-heun stating, \"It was possible to complete tests that would have been difficult to do alone because of Jeong-heun\'s help and so we were able to attain good results.\" She added, \"She never complained of the frequent all-nighters last semester and I really thank her for being such a great research partner.\" <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_02782144359040765 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-30_13-40-24_495.jpg\" target=_blank> Lee, Ji-hye is planning to present the research results by participating in the 78th European Arteriosclerosis Conference to be held in Hamburg, Germany in the middle of this month. Park, Jeong-heun, who will begin her master\'s degree course next semester will also participate in the HDL Research Conference to be held in Reus, Spain in September and is planning to present the research results of the aging-suppression tests that she is currently working on. Thus, Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun\'s research lab has continued its tradition of \'undergraduate student SCI thesis publication\'. This first started in December 2008. At the time, Park, Gi-hoon (25, the 3rd master\'s and doctorate\'s combined program), who was at the time a senior, became the first to discover that proteins extracted from Hyphantria cunea could be transformed using bio-engineering technologies to treat atherosclerosis, and published his paper in the Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, which was the second most authoritative international journal in the related sector. Furthermore, it was an issue because the main author of the paper was an undergraduate student. Also in the past January, Jang, Wook-joo (21), a junior, became the first in the world to clarify the aging-promotion mechanism of fructose and was listed as the first author in the SCI listed journal called Biochemical Biophysical Research Communication. Moreover, the research results were used to apply for a patent on the development of a treatment for suppressing metabolic syndromes such as aging-suppression and diabetes/arteriosclerosis, which is a rare achievement for an undergraduate student. This was achieved through the \'undergraduate research program (URP)\' support of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity, and after completing the project, Choi was also selected as the best S-level student in the analysis. This resulted in receiving the presidential award bestowed to \'Y-type Talents\' at the Yeungnam University 63rd Anniversary. Such achievements are the results of passing down the passion for academic exploration by seniors to juniors. Jang, Wook-joo and Park Jeong-heun could be recognized internationally for their research achievements despite the fact that they were undergraduates because Park, Gi-hoo and Lee, Ji-hye become their the role models. Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun (42), who is in charge of the lab, stated, \"Thanks to the diligence of Gi-hoon, who was nicknamed \'Kant of the School of Biotechnology\' and came to school everyday at 8 am and stayed until past 9 pm, the entire lab is filled with the passion to study.\" He added, \"I hope that senior and junior students will continue to collaborate to achieve great results and continue the tradition of our lab that continues to accumulate such achievements.\" Meanwhile, Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun, was recently introduced in the Researchers Page of the National Research Foundation of Korea for the accumulated research results on aging and arteriosclerosis.
