The students from YU Faculty of Architecture were well-received by the local people for their talent donation service activities. The students made service activities for environmental improvement in reside-vulnerable areas including farming and fishing villages with use of their architecture-related major capabilities.

YU Faculty of Architecture has been making college student service activities to repair farming and fishing village houses since 2012. They have been making aged house repair activities for reside-vulnerable classes staying in agricultural villages, etc. with about 10 days of schedule in every summer vacation.

Early in July, about 40 students visited the villages of Cheonggye-ri, Cheongha-myeon, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do and made service activities with 10-day schedule. They visited every house for service activities in advance for field survey, met local residents, and heard their opinions in order to set the direction of repair. They selected more than 10 houses in Cheonggye-ri village, prepared drawings of the houses to be repaired, established a detailed action plan, and started their service activities. They performed professional work including removal and repair of aged parts, painting, piping, and tile work, and improvement of squat toilets to flush toilets, etc. during the 10-day service period.

Chairman KWON Dong-gu (24, 5th Grade) of Faculty of Architecture said, “We have been participating in the service activities every year. It seems to be a pleasure to help somebody with use of our major. It is a proud to share our talents and I think that it is a valuable experience for us to use our major knowledge obtained in the school and to improve capability for practical work as well as voluntary study. I’d like to recommend students to participate in various service activities.”

Meanwhile, the students of YU Faculty of Architecture received many commendations from governments and related agencies including commendation of the minister, commendation of Korea Rural Community Corporation, commendation of Korean Institute of Rural Architecture, and commendation of Dasom Housing Welfare Foundation, etc. through talent donation service activities to repair rural houses since 2012.
