KWON Sun-ho of YU Department of Environmental Engineering (22, 4th Grade, upper photo) took first place in the 9th National College Students’ IEEE Quiz Contest.

The contest was supported by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and was managed by KITIS (Korea Industrial, Academic & Technological Information Services). IEEE is the largest electric & electronic technology organization in the world consisting of more than 420,000 members and performs development of international standards and strategy researches. The members of IEEE are acting as researchers of electric/electronic engineering, computer engineering, and basic science such as physics and mathematics. The journals published by IEEE are accepted as the top authority in every area.

The contest was held for domestic faculty students reading IEEE journals and is an online information search contest to solve quizzes by searching IEEE Xplore DB. In this contest, 30 quizzes on international research performances and recent technical trends including IEEE journals, academic theses, and international standards, etc. The quizzes consisted of objective type and short-answer subjective type and the participants submitted the answers on the line during April and May.

Mr. KWON took the first place in the contest and said about his feeling, “I have an experience to take first place in the Thesis Reading Quiz Contest of the University managed by YU Central Library last year. I am always very interested in academic thesis and continuous reading of theses seemed to let me take the prize.”

Given information such as theses and academic magazines is searched to solve quizzes but the level is very high. Especially, it is difficult for faculty students to search and understand main academic journals including large volume of theses written by professional researchers. It is possible to be included in the winner list only when integrated thinking capability is equipped for translation and analysis of searched information as well as accurate search of intended information in the contents of academic journals.

Mr. KWON said, “It is possible to get trendy information and knowledge by contacting various areas of academic journals. I could improve my problem-solving ability during searching and studying information. If students become familiar with use and study of various kinds of academic information from the time of faculty, they will be able to get global competitiveness as well as extension of knowledge.”
